Forgetting You on a Plane
Poem
The stale oxygen in this human cargo air ship
is drying each last molecule of stability I had on land
and expelling it back into the soft, deadly blue surrounding
through some invisible vacuum,
as if my store of peace was fueling this entire
turbulent
voyage.
The further in space I fly away from you,
the deeper my memories of you distort and settle,
like the clouds passing my tiny passenger window-
the close ones large and clear,
the far ones uncertain in detail
but certainly there
and certainly clouds of some sort.
As the sun sets on this vessel,
the clouds disappear all together,
at the same time
and all I need do is step onto this new shore,
the horizon darkening behind me.
