What Was Lost

Poem

It was a shame we met just a little too late to enjoy
The walks through the fields, the smell of the lilacs in bloom
Seeing the leaves change colors in cascades along the Catskills
Dancing at the weddings of friends we haven’t even met yet
The tales of road trips gone wrong and the “But aren’t we glad we did”
But perhaps that’s all life ends as
Us missing what we never thought we had to lose
As we pass each other in a New York City crosswalk
Briefly lock eyes
And walk on
