Poem

All at once, you were someone else.
I nearly introduced myself.
I wondered at the child before me-
A child. My God, had it always been so?

Had the wine been that strong?
Did I imagine it all?

You smiled and chattered on,
In an unrecognizable tone.
And I mumbled my responses,
To this stranger smiling blankly at me.

Had my mind been that wrong?
Did I imagine the fall?

Later, I stumbled over the ties alone.
Solitary, I pondered what I’d done.
My soul, now just knots and tangles,
Was gratefully numb to impending pain.

Had the tracks been less long,
I’d not have seen it at all.

But I knew what was coming.

The whistle blew.
