What I Think About in the Football Stands

Poem
There’s something treasured in watching someone you love
From the distance, as though to acknowledge
That had you made a few different turns along the way that
You wouldn’t know them at all
You’d just be watching a game on a field
Wondering who all the players were and realizing
If you’d done things differently thinking how
You might have known them
Finding yourself caught up in your own privilege is so chilling
To envy your future and mourn the alternatives at the same time
This chill running down my spine as you take the field
As I cheer a bit too loudly from the excitement in this moment
If only to acknowledge how incredible it is
That we’re here
