Gothicarus: Part XI – Bumps
Serial Poem
Did you hear that? I’m certain he’s back again.
Measured breaths against the floorboards
Betray the location of the fiend.
I will not move a hand or foot.
In stillness, I will pray in insistent tongues,
Will demand his prompt departure,
Calling on the name I know to be
The power that can vanquish him.
I must sleep; this constant terror, again stilled,
Will stir with the next- What was that?
My heavy eyes forced open, I scream-
But only silence issues forth.
I struggle against the airless, wretched night.
Alone, but observed by the wraith,
Who dares me to close my lids again,
To sink, at last, into his grip.
