Poem About Exploitation

A desperate grasp
for distant lights
obscures the dawn
surrenders sight
what was taken
left un-returned
what is given
all unearned
and the open hand
becomes a balled up fist
driven into darkening mist
to strike the distance
that draws away
what once was held
but now decays
no impact though
to strike fresh hope
just a flailing blow
at a thief’s harsh joke
and if the light ever comes again
you’ll see the scars
with no amends
because in the shadows
that made the break
a soul is lost
with no light to take
